Reblogging this to add some commentary.

Mako seems like he’ll be a fantastic character, and this line only confirmed it in my eyes. He had been cold and a bit of an ass to Korra and assuming that she was just another girl Bolin dragged in, and the moment he figures out she’s the Avatar he beats himself up a little for it. Here he’s literally going, “Nice going Mako, way to be a complete asshole without even knowing who she was.” That was something I certainly was not expecting and was very happy to see - he’s turning out to be everything I hoped for in his character but never expected to see become canon.

He’s definitely defined himself as a very different character from Zuko as well had to add this because I’ve been seeing more posts than I expected about how he and Zuko are really alike. Zuko was very angry, callous, quick to upset, never acknowledged any of his flaws and mistakes and had very self-centered goals in the beginning of ATLA. Mako is calm and cool, composed, has pretty selfless priorities, and seems very capable and willing to accept his mistakes and failures and will even beat himself up a little about them. The only things I see that are similar personality-wise is that they are both intensely focused and can be jerks (although for different reasons and in different ways).

So yeah, that’s it. I’m really looking forward to seeing his character develop, as well as his relationship with Bolin and Korra.

Also, as Bolin says, “I’m very confused right now.”, you can see Mako stop taking off his uniform, drop his hands to his sides and look up in what seems to be realization at Korra being the Avatar. I thought that was a really nice touch and lead in to this quote.
